What is Facebook Marketing Strategy  and How to Use Facebook AdBuilder

As you think about Facebook I want to show you a cool way that you can use the Facebook ad builder to learn about your audience so you can use Facebook’s ad builder to learn about your fans I’m in the Facebook ad manager but I am not going to use this to actually create an that I want to show you how you can use this to mine data and learn about one the audience on Facebook and to you can use this to learn about your specific fan base as well so let’s dive in so I’m in Facebook’s ad builder.

I already started to create an ad and you can just create any old ad what you want to do is get to this audience section and we’re gonna use the audience section here and we’re also going to look at this audience size here so I’m in Facebook and you can see right now I’m targeting everyone between 18 and over 65 any gender in America and there are 225 million people that I could potentially reach so what this is telling me is that there are 225 million people on Facebook that are in the United States and between 8 and over 18 essentially.

Now let’s say my business is in Cincinnati and I wonder well how many people are in Cincinnati on Facebook well guess what I can type in Cincinnati and I can choose the market or the city I’m choosing the market of Cincinnati here and we can see here now it’s 1.8 million people well how many of them are women and how many of them are men interesting let’s check if I click men only you can see it one from 1.8 to 780,000.

If I look at women only I can see it’s nine hundred and fifty thousand so what I can do is I can use this to learn about the people who are on Facebook in general now I’ve just shown you some basic demographics but we can take this even further what if I wanted to know how many people in Cincinnati so this is all let’s see how many people in Cincinnati speak Dutch less than 1000 okay interesting what about if I wanted to know how many of them speak any Chinese dialect 6500 people so these may not be things that are interesting to you but the point is that you can use this to learn about the audience on Facebook.

So this is actually a really cool market research tool to some degree to learn about the people who are on Facebook you can also do this with interests so let’s say I want to target people who are interested in social media so I can find people interested in social media or who have a job title of social media or who are employed by a social media company so first of all the opportunities to look at people in a different way is this huge but let’s start with people who work in social media so now I can see that well this is unavailable so let me cut out Cincinnati here and go back to United State so now I can see within the United States Facebook only recognizes 1500 people who have social media as their job title so that’s probably not going to be a great way for me to target people I can now come in here and look at how many people have social media as an employer okay unavailable.

So that means maybe I’m getting too specific what about if we try how many people are interested in social media now I can see that within the United States, 32 million people are interested in social media of those I can click on men now I can see 13 million of them are men and I can then see that 19 million of them are women so basically what I’m starting to do is use Facebook as a market research tool and I can now see okay if I’m if I want to target people who are interested in social media there’s 19 million women and only 13 million men so maybe if I’m thinking about.

How I’m gonna position my product offering or the images that I’m going to use if I know that there’s let’s call it 65% women and only 35% in my target group I could consider adapting my content I could also create two different ads for each group but right now what I’m doing is just looking at researching and as you can see there’s a lot of interesting things that you can figure out I can find out how many people in America are interested in beer so we can see here there are 21 million people in America or women only so we can see there are 21 million women interested in beer and we can compare that to one and see how many women are interested in wine 25 million so what you can see here is that I can use the Facebook ad builder and this audience size to actually mine Facebook data to learn about the kinds of people on Facebook.

As it pertains to my business so I did I’ve used this a lot with clients I was working with a client that’s in the parenting space and one of the things that was really interesting is they were interested in exploring doing a fatherhood campaign so if we look at the number of people who are interested in fatherhood we can see that within America 55 million people are interested in fatherhood.

So it’s pretty interesting so I’m thinking of doing a campaign I can see 55 million people are interested in fatherhood let’s see how many of them are men 20 million of them are men and 34 million are women so interestingly more women are interested in fatherhood than men are that’s insightful that’s interesting that tells you something as you’re thinking about developing a campaign women are more interested in their husbands being great dad then the dads are interested in it crazy but super interesting and you can use these insights in all sorts of different ways so something you can do is actually use the Facebook ad builder to gain insights just about people who are on Facebook.

Which is in most cases a mirror of the population the other thing that you can do is you can actually use this to learn more about the people who have liked your page so, for example, I can come in here and look at people who have liked boot camp digital so at the bottom I said okay I want to look at people who liked bootcamp de chat all I’m gonna do all genders and it’s let’s make it broader well we can’t make it broader than the United States.

But I could do the same thing in theory where I could say okay within the United States these are all of the people who have like boot camp digital there’s a thousand people well maybe I’m thinking of doing an event and I’m trying to decide should it be a craft for your event or a wine event I can come in here and type in craft beer and Facebook will show me how many people within the United States.

Those who have liked boot camp digital are interested in beer versus wine versus fill in the blank I can put anything in here that is an interest in Facebook so what you can do is you can actually use this tool in Facebook which is intended for advertising one for general market research or two to learn even more about your audience on Facebook by looking at your Facebook audience and then starting to type in things like men women interest languages and you can learn more about your Facebook page.

This way then for your page analytics my page insights are only gonna give me basic demographics about the people who’ve liked my page it’s not gonna tell me if they like beer or wine or if they’re also interested in marketing or public relations or if they’re also interested in entrepreneurship I can discover all of that through this functionality here the only caveat is you need a large enough fanbase for this to be meaningful so you can see here Facebook requires me to choose a location first and within the United States I have less than a thousand people Facebook will not show data in the audience size of it’s under a thousand people so the only downside of this is you need a Facebook page with the number of people in order for this to be relevant.
