5 Ways to Read Faster and Grasp More in PDF

Let us now take a look at 5 simple ways to read and assimilate faster.

Read rapidly through the entire content to get a general idea of the content. Take notice of the subheadings, abstract, introduction, and conclusion to give a clear picture of what the article is based on. It will be easier to read with efficiency if you are aware of what the passage is trying to convey. This is the part that will also help you save time while searching for specific information.

  • Increase your concentration:

This is quite indispensable to read faster and remember stuff. When you sit down to read, it becomes a problem as distractions mount around you. Focusing on a thing for a long time is challenging and wears your mind out. Hence, it is necessary to reduce the time invested in reading. You can train yourself by setting a goal while reading. Reading without focus would hamper one’s progression and result in regression, i.e. reading back the same line again and again.

  • Use a pointer like a pen to help you focus on the words and count the number of words in a line.
  • Calculate the number of lines, to get an average word count per page.
  • Once you are done with the number, challenge yourself to see how long you take to read the complete no. of words.

This exercise will turn out to be an incentive as you increase the eye fixation efficiency without any visual aid to focus.

  • Stop unconscious vocalization:

It is a common habit to verbalize every word you come across unconsciously in your head. Unconscious verbalization becomes a distraction from your focus. It greatly hinders your process of reading faster. Scan through the words without paying attention to the pronunciation of the word.  By paying attention to stopping sub-vocalization, it will result in an increase in the word-per-minute count.

  • Have a control knob on speed:

You simply can’t skim through without paying attention to certain words, which requires attention. One can run through less informative words, but when it comes to a technical passage, you will find a bunch of technical terms. You need to slow down and understand it. Don’t always skim, but also scan as your goal isn’t only quick reading, but easy retention as well.

  • Construct and visualize the essence:

Reading the passage with enhanced speed doesn’t help you achieve anything. Just reading without understanding is a waste of time. When you skim and scan alternatively depending on the technicality of words, you must be able to assimilate the information entailed by the author in the content.

Once you are done with reading a page, immediately summarize or construct the gist of the page in simple language.  Create a mental picture of the flow of content. For example- Passages explaining the mechanism of machines or a cellular process in the body can be better remembered by making a flow chart to retain the information acquired in the head.

Reading efficiency develops with practice. It takes time to see improvement in reading skills. Regularly practice 4 to 5 pages using the above-mentioned tips to train your mind and eyes. In the beginning, you will find it hard to focus amidst distractions, but once you see the improvement that will indirectly motivate you to focus.
